As the term ‘cross’ refers to, this is a peel based on the chemical reconstruction of skin scars. The peel involves a 100% Trichloracetic acid (TCA) solution, which is placed onto the end of a sharpened wooden applicator and pressed firmly into the ice pick scar. The application of TCA onto the skin causes denaturing of proteins and necrosis of skin cells within the epidermal-dermal layers. This results in a scab-like formation, which is sloughed off after a period of 5-10 days, as the skin undergoes a repair response, resurfacing damaged layers. Collagen remodelling and thickening of the underlying dermis takes place over the next 1-3 months. With repeated cross treatments, spaning 6-8 weekly apart, the ice pick scarring is gradually thickened, softening the appearance and improving the skin texture.
